Is self-care and wealth related

Lately, I have been wondering if self-care and wealth are related. I would love to read some evidence backed research on this specific relationship but I struggled to find any.

They say you should write about what you want to read about. This article is a culmination of points from my own lived experiences and connecting the dots between the books I’ve read, podcasts I’ve listened to and comments from people I speak with and follow on social media.

You ‘ve probably heard of the “Millionaire Morning” (routine). Successful people prioritize themself before doing anything else for the day. A “Millionaire Morning” routine will involve some form of exercise, meditative practice and a healthy breakfast. This helps to prime their body and mind for a productive day ahead.

Polina Pushkareva (@nioly), who is a self-made millionaire, shared on her Instagram stories that “The less I was doing for myself, the less action was in my life and the less results and growth I could see = The worse I felt and the less power I felt to start doing something to change it.”

I have had a turbulent relationship with self-care since having my first child over 4 years ago. Looking after our baby was, of course, my priority and apart from eating healthily and having to walk our dog, I did not do anything more to take care of myself. I was in survival mode during the depths of sleep-deprivation and working full-time. Our days were beautiful and exciting but extremely busy. Not only did we have a young child to look after, we had also recently immigrated to Portugal. After purchasing our home when the South African Rand was weak (against the Euro), the funds in our bank accounts were low. We expected all of this ahead of time so we didn’t complain, it just was what it was…

On the contrary, before I became a parent I would workout daily, journal, meditate, eat healthily and go for spa treatments regularly. I had so many self-care rituals. I was thriving in my super-yachting career, purchasing real estate and achieving any goal I set for myself!

It is obvious to see the stark difference in my life when I was prioritizing self-care versus when I wasn’t. However, there are just too many other factors that changed alongside my cull of self-care rituals. We had a baby, we were sleep-deprived, emigrated and we purchased a house all during a global pandemic.

It would be much easier for me to see if there was a difference in my wealth (which I believe is not only financial success but also having a healthy body and clear mind) if nothing changed except for my self-care rituals.

Now that we are fully settled in Portugal and recently had our second child, I am making a consistent effort to include self-care into my every day. As a mother of two, I incorporate smaller moments of self-care throughout my day. Examples of my self-care ‘moments’ are body brushing, getting a massage once per month, eating healthily, walking daily, reading and meditating. These small additions energize me and make me feel good which ripples into the rest of my day. When I actively care for myself, my day is dramatically more productive. The interactions I have with others are positive and I have more ideas which are easy for me to action. For example, this blog has come to fruition along with many more exciting developments in my life!

Thanks to science backed research, we know that when we feel good we vibrate at a higher frequency. When we vibrate at a higher frequency, we attract similar frequencies in the form of emotions, events, situations and things. This works the opposite way around too. When we feel bad, we attract frequencies vibrating at a lower level which in turn, make us feel worse.

Personally, I do believe that self-care and wealth are related. Do things that make you feel good so that you attract more of those things.

There are so many ways to incorporate self-care into your day but if you feel overwhelmed with where to start, I would say that the most effective would be to start with eating healthily. Eating a nutritionally dense, whole foods diet will help you to make good decisions the rest of the day. You will be more productive at work, more patient with your children and have more energy to exercise. As a result, you feel even more energized.

Although eating healthily will positively impact all aspects of your life, it is important to remember that self-care is not just for your body. You need to care for your mind and soul too. Finding ways to incorporate a combination of self-care rituals will help you to feel good, vibrate at a higher frequency and as a result, attract more wealth into your life.

Here are some self-care ideas:

For Your Body:

1. Eating nutritionally dense, whole foods
2. Exercise daily
3. Aim for 8 hours+ sleep at night
4. Cold plunge or cold shower
5. Sauna
6. Get a massage or other spa treatments

For Your Mind:

1. Read a book
2. Meditate
3. Listen to a podcast
4. Color-in, knit or cook a healthy meal

For Your Soul:

1. Pray
2. Journal
3. Spend time with loved ones
4. Gratitude list
